The version I installed was the Cinnamon 64-bit edition.
Cinnamon provides a modern take on the traditional desktop.
What you end up with is something familiar looking but very stylish.
The tool I used for this job is called the.
Unless you have already installed Java previously.
To install Java click 'Install'.
Partition the drive Normally the disk partitioning is the trickiest part when it comes to dual booting.
To run the disk utility click 'Go' from the menu and select 'Utilities' and then click on the 'Disk Utility' icon.
The 'Disk Utility' shows the states of each drive and can be used to create recovery partitions, erase disks and restore partitions.
As you can see from the image above I have three disks.
The disk will be split right down the middle.
You can adjust the new partition by increasing or decreasing the size.
You should format the disk to 'Free Space'.
Once you have the disks looking as you want them to click 'Apply'.
A warning message is displayed and if you are unsure as to whether you want to go ahead then you should click cancel.
If you are happy to continue click 'Partition'.
The partitioning process takes a little while to complete.
Booting into Linux Mint Live To boot into the live version of Linux Mint reboot your computer and hold down the 'Alt' key.
When the computer boots you will have an image similar to the one above.
The number of icons will depend on the bootable devices available.
The installation is now fairly standard.
Click the language to be used for installation purposes.
If you feel like a challenge try Welsh Cymraeg otherwise I would select the one you are most comfortable with.
The next screen shows you how prepared you are for installing Linux Mint.
It is a good idea to have the MacBook Air plugged in during the installation and you must have at least 8.
The internet connection is optional and for reasons I will explain later quite tricky to achieve.
Click on 'Install Now' to continue.
In the next step choose your location by clicking in the appropriate position on the map.
Enter your name, pick a username and enter a strong password.
Note that the computer name has junk in it so change the computer's name to something more meaningful.
The files will now be copied to your MacBook and once the process has finished a message will be displayed saying you can now reboot your computer.
Click 'Continue Testing' as there is a little bit more work to be done.
To fix the boot order open up a terminal window.
You can do this by clicking the 4th icon from the left in the panel at the bottom of Linux Mint.
Type the following commands: sudo apt-get install efibootmgr sudo efibootmgr As you can see from the image above my MacBook Air is going to boot 0000 first and then 0080.
The labelling of the disks is shown underneath.
Note that it says Ubuntu and not Linux Mint but it means the same thing.
If the boot order shows Ubuntu as 2nd in the boot order you need to run a command to put it in 1st position.
If your disks are the opposite way round then you will need to switch the 0,80.
This is not the best solution though and the next part of this guide will provide a slightly better one.
Fix the Grub boot menu From within Linux Mint not the live version, the installed version open up the terminal window again 4th icon from left on the bottom panel.
Connecting to the internet Connecting to the internet is usually incredibly easy but the MacBook Air uses Broadcom for connecting wirelessly and this has always caused issues for Linux.
I have read a number of guides for resolving this issue and none of them worked for me, so here is the way I did it.
The main issue is that to connect to the internet you need to install the Broadcom driver but to install the Broadcom driver you need an internet connection.
Normally you could get around this by connecting your computer via an ethernet cable but the MacBook Air doesn't have an ethernet port.
You are then able to install the correct drivers by using the driver manager within Linux Mint.
There is another way though that costs no money at all which is the method I used.
To do this click the file manager icon which is available on the bottom panel 5 from the left, looks like a folder.
Click on the 'Menu', select 'Administration' and then 'Software Sources'.
Close the 'Software Sources' icon and then open up a terminal window.
If everything goes well you should now be able to click the network icon in the system tray and a list of wireless networks should appear.
Summary The biggest challenge to installing Linux Mint 17 on a MacBook Air is trying to get the wireless working.
I have tested many of the other features of the MacBook and most things seem to work well such as audio, the trackpad, recovering from sleep mode etc.

I like to test linux every few years.
But screen text was rendered so poorly!
And the trackpad wasn't very responsive even after I adjusted the trackpad settings.
For me the problem is there is no 5 sec timeout so it boots directly in to Mint.
If I boot with the down arrow pressed it works fine.
Also that doesnt work for me any tips even before addig those lines to the grub file it rebooted straight in mint withouy grub Anonymous I'm surprised this worked for you.

You can select a partition under the 'custom' tab to install under, and also select a swap partition.
I used the same tutorial to install Ubuntu trusty 14.
Everything worked perfectly, even the wireless worked without the need to install drivers.
It didn't work during 'try Ubuntu' phase, but worked after reboot.

That happened to me too after an upgrade.
I fixed it by booting to a linux live cd and from there I did the 'Fix the boot loader' from tutorial.
Will these instructions work for an old MacPro 3.

The laptop I have that has supported and working video, has horrible intermittent problems with the trackpad and keyboard freezing for 5 seconds at a time.
The laptop that doesn't have that problem, still has a lot of residual graphics problems.

This requires someone who has physical access to the specific hardware, who is extremely familiar with linux kernel code, who wants to make it work for themselves or their employer.
It doesn't really happen any other way.

I'm wondering if anyone here has installed linux on a new blade.
From what I read after some googling, the major problems involved the track pad, but after some months people started getting it working.
If anyone has had any experiences, good or bad with linux on a 14' blade, I'd love to hear them I've jumped in with both feet.
I rebooted the Razer, pressed F1 to go into bios and booted from said stick.
Everything seems to work so far.
I'm now trying to update the trackpad so I can do two finger scroll and two finger right click.
The only thing I saved from Windows 8 was the Razer wallpaper Great success I know at least one other person here is interested in this so I'm posting for everyone.
Also, posting it in case I have to do it again in the future.
After some fiddling I've gotten my nvidia drivers running on ubuntu.
Here are the steps I needed to take to make it happen.
Once that was installed, I let the software updater run updates and reboot.
I'm still not sure I need this, but I'm under the impression that if this isn't done, it messes up your xorg.
I didn't restart and I tried glxinfo again, but it threw an error.
I also tried running nvidia-settings, but it didn't show that my driver was loaded.
Here's where something panic inducing will happen.
After booting the screen is black.
Doesn't even look like the backlight is on.
Just close the lid and wait for the razer logo on the lid to dim indicating the laptop went to sleep.
See, you guys that don't like the backlight logo, it's useful.
Now, open the lid back up and the laptop should wake.
If not, just hit the up arrow key or something.
Anyway, when it wakes, the black screen flashes some white terminal text too quickly to read and then the password screen comes up!
Running nvidia-settings likewise is much more interesting.
At this point, your drivers are done.
I tried installing the nvidia-cuda-toolkit from the xorg-edgers ppa, but I couldn't find where it installed the toolkit other than the binaries, which wasn't very useful.
So I removed that and downloaded the cuda-7.
I'm still not sure if I needed the bumblebee-nvidia install, but it doesn't seem to be causing any harm.
Hope that was interesting to someone You can always make a partition and keep the default windows on one and run linux on the other until you are comfortable with it.

This is a known issue with grub when its booting up using nvidia drivers.
This is what fixed the black screen boot for me on my dev macbook pro.
Im glad the new blade likes linux, its hard for linux to not work on every computer but specific hardware still causes issues because manufactures are dumb about how they make stuff.
The 'windows way' needs to die, hard.

You didn't really start it because unless you extensively kept up with the changes that were being made in windows 8, taking 40 seconds to shutdown is not unheard of.

Linux on MacBooks has gone a long way since the 2nd gen air was introduced and the first core i7 macbook pro was introduced.
There's a few minor things that don't work in the retina macbook pro or macbook air, but its the same things webcam, etc.
But majority of things work great.
I bought it because for the price I got it, only the X1 was up there, but the lack of a decent keyboard, stupid touch panel with rotating buttons and the god damn screen turned me off.
Im waiting to buy a air as soon as a retina version is announced.

I used Apple hardware exclusively from 1997 to 2013.
I have so many reasons why I don't want one any more.
Listing them would only start a flame war and detract from the topic of the thread though I would like to correct some older information I found via Google.
I read on an older post somewhere that they did not.
Tap and a half to drag.
Two finger tap for right click.
Three finger double tap brings up app switcher.
Four finger tap brings up the ubuntu dash.
Everything I've tried has worked.
The only thing I wished I could adjust would be trackpad speed.
The fastest setting was still slightly slow to me, but I've already gotten used to it.
The speed is probably fine, there's just so many pixels on this screen 3 Graphics drivers.
Aside from the black screen issue I mentioned, I haven't noticed any instability or problems yet.
Overall, I'm super pleased with it.
I hope other Linux users considering the purchase of a new Blade find this post helpful.

For 11', the resoluton has been fine for me.
I only wish the display was better.
The viewing angles aren't that much better than my cheapy Acer netbook.
If you're off center, colors are off.
Still haven't figured out the black screen thing, but I don't believe it's Razer specific.
I started a thread on the nvidia devtalk forums about it and it seems others on different hardware experience the same thing.
I've also noticed the mouse cursor disappears when it's along the very top edge of the screen.
Both of these are minor annoyances at worst.
I have noticed a new issue.
It sounds like it is trying to go into a low power mode on the speakers, but then it comes back on, ad nauseum.
I rebooted on battery power and when I did I get the 'Problem detected' dialog and an option to send a bug report.
That came up twice until I pluged in the laptop.
It seems I can make the popping go away by disabling the powersave.
The battery appears to drain very quickly with the nvidia gpu enabled.
I'm going to let it drain to see how long it lasts, charge up, then try again with intel graphics and see what difference there is.
I depleted the battery this way to make sure it wasn't a battery calibration thing.
With the intel gpu enabled, it appears to be a little better than 2% per minute.
Down 10% after 21 minutes of usage.
So it should last about 3:30 away from a wall socket.
Charging to full battery takes about 2:25.
